I had to look this up (here: http://heasarc.nasa.gov/docs/cosmic/planets.html) but it appears that the distance between Pluto, the furthest out planet*, is an average of 5,913,520,000 kilometres (3,695,950,000 miles) from the Sun, which is the centre of the solar system. So this can be seen as the radius (half-diameter) of the system.

      * Pluto has recently lost its status as a planet though!
