• Question: how much does your work cost a year????

      Oooh good question (and one I try not to think about too much!)

      With all of my equipment and lab costs etc. it must be thousands of pounds!

      (I don’t know exactly because I am not in charge of the money!)

      Computing is cheaper than some of the other subjects, I think, because most of us only need a single computer to do our work on! That said, travelling is expensive no matter what job you do, and scientists have to travel a lot to talk about their work.

      It’s not unusual for a group of scientists to be given millions of pounds for a few years’ work! This is spent on hiring people, buying equipment, paying for travel funding and so on. But PhD students are quite cheap. There are robots in our department that cost more than four years of my wages!
