Part of the reason is that I’ve played and made a lot of videogames – so I know a lot about them, which gives me a good insight into what things to look at next, new ideas, and who to ask for advice!
Another good reason, though, is that it’s quite a new problem. When you do a PhD (or any scientific research, really) it has to be new, you have to be providing new knowledge to the world. Although computers painting pictures or composing music is still very new indeed, making videogames is even less explored. That’s good news for me – it means there are lots of unanswered questions I can look at!
When I was little I wanted to make these adventure computer games as I spent a lot of time playing them (ever heard of police quest and king’s quest??). I wonder whether ANGELINA makes those too, Mike?
Until I first started I’m a scientist I didn’t even know you could get computers to design computer games! It sounds like a very exciting area to be working in!
