This is sort of related to the ‘first country’ question, but the earliest records I can find on a city is Ur, a city near the Persian Gulf in an area that is now part of Iraq. It wasn’t much of a city in the sense that we call today, but it was a huge meeting point for people, and contained lots of settlements and buildings!

By all living in the same area, people could save time, share jobs, and were much safer. Cities have lots of benefits – that’s why they continue to grow larger even today!
