Everything is made up of ‘chemicals’ so even though some food chain advertise their food as chemical-free this is a little bit of a red herring because the main components of food (fat, sugar, protein, starch) is all a chemical. Everything in the universe, down at the most primitive level, is made up of atoms. Atoms can be of a different element such as carbon, oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen (the main components of organic, meaning living, things) or various metals such as iron, zinc, tungsten and many others) and many others. The identity of the element will determine how it behaves physically on its own and when put together with other atoms. Atoms are joined together by chemical bonds into molecules and these molecules can either be very small (like water, contains 3 atoms only) or very big (like proteins or DNA which contains billions of atoms). These molecules then interact together and with atoms to determine what their properties are. But at the end of the day, everything is made up of atoms and molecules to everything is “chemical”.

Were you thinking along those lines or did you think more about toxic chemicals that are often discussed in media when there are spills and other disasters?
