A volcano is basically a connection to the inside of the earth, where the rocks are molten. The reason a volcano forms is because there is a pressure build up, often due to the sliding of tectonic plates (they’re basically the bits of earth surface that make up the top layer and bump into each other), which needs to be released. But I am not a geologist, so would prefer to leave the details to Cees.
