I absolutely love being a scientist. I couldn’t imagine being anything else. Every day I get to think about exciting, strange things, and talk to interesting and weird people!

A few weeks ago I was in Ireland talking to other scientists about computers. I met someone who is trying to invent a joke-making machine; someone who is teaching computers to compose music for nursery rhymes; and I met someone who is trying to get a computer to invent recipes!

Meeting these people and talking about exciting new problems is very, very rewarding and fun.

Yes, I do, there is a great amount of excitement in doing that sort of work because you’re always looking to find out something new that hasn’t been known before.

And you also meet a great bunch of people as work colleagues, or at least I certainly have. Many of them have become good friends. The downside of science are the often short term contracts so people come and go quite a bit so many of the friends you make end up moving on to other places. On the plus side, this can me getting to live in interesting places.

I love being a scientist. I get to spend my days doing stuff that I really care about. A lot of my time is spent learning new things – something else I love to do. Finally, I think in some small ( very very teeny weeny) way I am making a difference to the world with my work. 🙂
