The Internet is a complicated set of computers, all joined together and talking with each other! Some of these computers are just readers – like the one you’re using to look at the Internet right now. Other computers are ‘servers’. These are the ones that store websites on them, so when you type in “www.iasuk.ddev.site”, there’s a machine in the UK somewhere that sends your PC all the information on this website, including my answer to this question!

There are also some very, very special computers that help connect your PC with the other servers. They’re like big, electronic phonebooks – when you type in “www.iasuk.ddev.site”, your PC goes and asks these bit phonebook-like servers where it can find the website it wants to read. Without these special machines, it would be very hard to find any websites at all!

Me too, Emma. The main point of the internet, when it was originally created, was that the network wouldn’t go down if a single server went down, i.e. there is a lot of redundancy and the traffic can be routed a different way if one particular location is down (the analogy is the road network – if there is a traffic jam in one particular place, you can usually find an alternative traffic-free route).
