When you’re very, very young (like my one year-old cousin) you need to sleep as much as you can, because babies are very weak and need to rest a lot. As you get older you’re able to stay awake for longer, but sleeping is still very good – you should probably sleep for between eight and nine hours a night until you’re around 16!
Of course, it’s different for everyone, but sleep is good in general! I used to have trouble sleeping so I make sure I get out and go for a walk every day. Computer scientists don’t move around much at their desks, so we have to be careful to try and get some exercise!
I read somewhere that schoolage children need 10-12 hours of sleep to unwind and regenerate (I think you need more than adukts because of the growing and development you are still doing), but apparently it’s very individual and you can’t say that every ten year old will need that amount of sleep…
As Michael and Blanka said, the amount of sleep we need varies from person to person but it is important that we get enough. If we don’t get enough sleep our brain’s ability to function suffers and we may start forgetting things or start making irrational decisions.
I read something about how if you go without sleep for 17hours in a row it can decrease how well we function as much as 2 glasses of wine would an adult (that’s roughly the legal drink drive limit).
