Having been to the chocolate museum in Switzerland during a trip there last autumn, I believe that chocolate beverages were first made from the cocoa plant by the Aztecs (a Mexican tribe) about 3000 years ago. But those were very different from the products we now know as chocolate. Are you keen on chocolate?

Both the Aztecs and the Mayans (another South American tribe) had chocolate drinks. But they weren’t like the hot chocolate we have today. They were much more bitter and had spices like chilli in them (sounds not very nice I know, but I had a taste once on a visit to a chocolate museum and it was actually quite nice!)

I don’t think there were solid chocolate bars until the end of the 1700’s/start of the 1800’s.

If you do like chocolate, are you a dark, milk or white chocolate fan?
